Founded in New York City in 1974\, the company\, affectionately known as the Trocks\, began by appearing in late-late shows in off-off Broadway lofts for small audiences who appreciated the iconoclastic humor of it all. In the over 50 years since then\, the company has grown to achieve great appeal among more mainstream audiences who\, each season\, flock to theaters throughout the world to see these prima ballerinas perform. Revered by ballet aficionados as well as the uninitiated—those who don't know a plié from a jeté—the Trocks are "a guaranteed hoot for people who know nothing of ballet and an absolute must for those who think they know the originals." SUMMARY:Rennie Harris Puremovement American Street Dance Theater – Nuttin' but a Word
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\n  \n$25 – $59 \nMahaiwe Member & Youth Discount Event  \n$25 Reserved\n$39 Preferred\n$59 Premium  \nMembers receive $5 off Preferred and Premium level tickets\n$15 ages 30 and under (visit the Box Office or call 413-528-0100\, Wed – Sat\, 12-4pm)  \nCelebrated choreographer Rennie Harris returns to Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center to lay down his three laws of hip-hop—individuality\, creativity\, innovation. Here to expose the essence of their art form with unmatched subtlety and surprise\, the indefatigably disciplined dancers of Rennie Harris Puremovement American Street Dance Theater command the stage with a mixtape of moves from b-boying to Campbell locking to house. Every step tells a story in sync with the rhythm\, honoring hip-hop’s roots while raising the bar to new heights. You can try to shout ’em down\, but you ain’t said Nuttin’ but a Word.  \n“This suite of works challenges the structural integrity of Campbell locking\, house\, hip-hop\, and B-boying. Now that we are a global hip-hop nation\, we seem to have become hip-hop/street dance zealots. This purist attitude has stagnated the natural progression of street dance. Simply put\, we have become elitist about Hip-hop culture. This elitism is due to this generation’s obsession with ‘keeping it real.’ The truth of the matter is this generation will never relive my generation’s era of original dance. My generation defined the three laws of Hip-hop culture: innovation\, individuality\, and creativity. At best\, they can appreciate it\, pay homage to it\, and acknowledge it as the foundational era of hip-hop/street dance it was; in doing that\, they will tap into their individuality\, creativity\, and innovation\, which in turn ensures progress. The work’s title\, Nuttin’ But A Word\, was taken from a cultural phrase used amongst Blacks in the United States. The complete phrase is\, ‘You ain’t said nothing but a word’; loosely translated\, it means\, ‘Your words mean nothing — pay close attention because what I do next will trump anything you have to say.’ Hip-hop/street dance is progressive by design. There is nothing about the three Laws of Hip-Hop that suggests stagnation. Nothing about these laws indicates that we as practitioners of Hip-hop should only adhere to its foundation; it is quite the opposite. Nuttin’ But A Word challenges the Hip-hop puritans at every turn and reminds us that we will not evolve as a form without individuality\, creativity\, and innovation.” – Rennie Harris  \nSponsored by

SUMMARY:Pilobolusre:CREATION Tour
DESCRIPTION:Including a post-performance talk with Pilobolus\nTICKETS\n\n$28 – $78  \nReserved $28 \nPreferred $58 \nPremium $78   \nMembers receive $5 off each ticket \n$15 ages 30 and under (visit the Box Office or call 413-528-0100\, Wed – Sat\, 12-4pm)  \nStep into a realm where imagination knows no limits. The boundaries of gravity and creativity blur\, offering an intimate window into the essence of creativity itself with Pilobolus’ re:CREATION Tour\, bringing their celebrated collection of repertory to delighted audiences from coast to coast. re:CREATION is a transformative odyssey of reinvention where both audience and artists rediscover\, redefine\, and recreate timeless narratives through new visions of history\, myth\, and the innate human need for expression.   \nPilobolus will debut its interpretation of Martha Graham’s seminal work\, Lamentation\, on the Mahaiwe stage to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the Martha Graham Dance Company—Graham100—as part of the Lamentation Variations project.  \nPilobolus has tested the limits of human physicality to explore the beauty and the power of connected bodies since being founded at Dartmouth College in 1971.  Pilobolus has performed on Broadway\, at The Oscars\, and the Olympic games\, and created over 120 dance works. The mission of Pilobolus is to create\, perform\, and preserve dances\, expand and diversify audiences\, and teach dancers\, non-dancers\, and organizations to harness creative potential. \nProgram: \nBloodlines: This women’s duet\, a rare gem in Pilobolus’s 50+ year repertory\, explores the natural progression of life\, as children eventually come to support their predecessors. Sculptural in form\, highlighting balance and strength\, and capturing the essence of life’s evolving roles and everlasting cycles. It explores the beautiful complexities of role reversals that are not just inevitable\, but also enriching\, as they reveal the unfading bonds that link generations. \nLamentation: Pilobolus is honored to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the Martha Graham Dance Company—GRAHAM100—by bringing its interpretation of Graham’s seminal work\, Lamentation\, to the stage as part of the Lamentation Variations Project. \nWalklyndon\, a seminal piece in Pilobolus’s repertoire\, is an all-time favorite that captures the playful essence of the company’s early days. During this time\, four men were joyously exploring outlets for creativity\, barnstorming the Northeast\, and even opening for Frank Zappa. Created in a squash court in Lyndonville\, VT\, and inspired by silly walks and slapstick\, this 50-year-old classic continues to resonate with audiences worldwide. It reflects the company’s penchant for double entendres and boundless energy\, filling theaters with squeals of laughter from both children and adults alike. \nTales from the Underworld\, a new sextet\, is a Pilobolean take on the story ballet\, exploring the delicate balance between love and loss. Inspired by the tragic love story of Eurydice and Orpheus\, the piece meditates on the rapture of love and how it can draw us into a trance-like descent where the fragility of human connection is laid bare. With an evocative yet cerebral score by Bogie and unique lighting that creates two distinct worlds—the visible realm above and the murky underbelly below—Tales from the Underworld embodies the universal journey of life’s cycles and a renewed sense of responsibility for our shared human experience with a blend of horror\, humor\, and revelation. \nRushes: A collaboration with world-renowned dance-theater makers Inbal Pinto and Avshalom Pollak\, Rushes is a mix of movement languages born out of a series of conversations and a laboratory workshop. In an isolated community of broken dreams\, six characters navigate belonging\, isolation\, desperation\, and relief\, punctuated by surreal humor in a world where Jasque Tati meets Nikolai Gogol. Pilobolus’s quirky partnering\, graceful glides\, unforgettable props usage\, and deep emotional impact make the piece unforgettable. Rushes is a remarkable exploration of the range and intensity of deep collaboration\, a harmonious blending of depth and whimsy in an unconventional narrative that touches audiences profoundly. \n\nSponsored by
