Du Bois Center at UMass Amherst and The Du Bois Freedom Center Present a special evening celebrating the lives\, works\, and friendship of American scholar-activist W. E. B. Du Bois and the British composer\, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. The two first met in 1900 at the first Pan-African Conference in London and shared a bond centered on the celebration of Black history\, culture\, and identity. They forged a firm friendship which lasted until Coleridge-Taylor’s untimely death in 1912. The event will begin with a group reading of ‘The Immortal Child’ from W. E. B. Du Bois’\, Darkwater (1920)\, which he penned in memory and tribute to his late friend.    \nThis reading will be followed by a performance of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Clarinet Quintet in F-sharp Minor\, which displays both his virtuosity as a performer and his adoption of musical motifs and ideas from the African Diaspora. Our evening will conclude with an opportunity for audience members to engage in questions and conversation with the musicians and representatives from both the W. E. B. Du Bois Center at UMass Amherst and the Du Bois Freedom Center.  \nMUSIC PERFORMANCE:\nClarinet Quintet in F-sharp Minor\, Op. 10 / Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1895)\nI. Allegro energico\nII. Allegro agitato \nMUSICIANS:\nHannah Berube – Clarinet\nHannah Collins – Cello\nClara Lyon – Violin\nHyobi Sim – Violin\nElijah Wilson – Violin \nFeatured musicians come with experience from the Lydian String Quartet\, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra\, New England Repertory Orchestra\, and A Far Cry.  \nW.E. B. Du Bois (1868 – 1963) Born in Great Barrington\, Massachusetts three years after the end of the American Civil War\, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois rose to prominence initially as a scholar and then as an international leader in the fight for social justice and racial equality. Du Bois gained his undergraduate degree from Fisk University before becoming the first Black man to gain a PhD from Harvard University. \nHis early work in the emerging science of sociology helped establish this discipline in American academia and brought Du Bois to Atlanta University in the 1890s. It was here\, however\, that Du Bois once again encountered the violent racism of the American South which brought the realization that scholarship alone would not be enough – he must become a public intellectual leader as well. In 1903 Du Bois published the sensational volume of essays\, The Souls of Black Folk\, which remains a classic of American literary depictions of Black life in America. He helped found the Niagara movement in 1905 and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. He was the editor of the NAACP’s mouthpiece\, The Crisis\, for almost a quarter of a century.  \nDu Bois travelled the world advocating for the rights of the oppressed everywhere. He helped convene the Pan-African Congresses following the First World War and he was active in the struggle for peace during the Cold War. He died in 1963 in Accra\, capital of the newly-independent Ghana. Throughout his long life\, Du Bois never stopped producing writing and scholarship that continues to inform and inspire in equal measure long after his passing. The University of Massachusetts Amherst are proud to be the custodians of Du Bois’s archival papers which reside in the Robert S. Cox Special Collections & University Archives Research Center.  \nSamuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) Born in Holborn\, Central London\, in 1875 to an English mother and a father who originally came from Sierra Leone\, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor rose to fame as a composer in his early twenties. One of his most notable pieces from his early career was Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast\, which he debuted in 1898. His influences were many\, but included traditional African music and Coleridge-Taylor took great pride in his own African heritage. In 1900 he participated in the First Pan-African Conference\, held in London\, as the youngest delegate. It was here that he met\, and formed a friendship with\, W. E. B. Du Bois.  \nSamuel Coleridge-Taylor wrote the Clarinet Quintet in response to a remark by his composition professor that it would be impossible to write a piece for the instrumentation that was not influenced by Johannes Brahms’ monumental Clarinet Quintet. In 1895 while still a student at the Royal Academy of Music\, Coleridge-Taylor rose to the challenge\, creating a work using a highly skilled and daring treatment of the instrumentation that drew upon his own rich musical heritage. The first documented 17 performances of Coleridge-Taylor’s Clarinet Quintet in the United States occurred in 1906 on his second US tour. Members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra performed the work on a program alongside selections from his Op. 57 Sorrow Songs and Op. 59 Twenty-four Negro Melodies. Coleridge-Taylor accompanied the great Black American composer and baritone Harry Burleigh\, who had famously succeeded in bringing spirituals to the American classical music stage. Notably\, Coleridge-Taylor donated proceeds from this performance to Atlanta University\, where W. E. B. Du Bois was teaching.

Bash will be interviewed by Lisa Sharkey.  \nDana Bash is CNN's chief political correspondent\, anchor of Inside Politics with Dana Bash and co-anchor of State of the Union with Jake Tapper and Dana Bash\, the network's Sunday morning newsmaker show. Bash is an award-winning journalist who plays a key role in the network's political coverage\, conducting high-profile interviews with candidates\, serving as an anchor for CNN's Election Night in America special coverage and frequently moderating presidential debates and town hall specials.  \nBash's first book America's Deadliest Election\, which she co-authored with David Fisher\, details the 1872 Louisiana gubernatorial election. It debuted on The New York Times bestseller list. In 2021\, Bash launched her CNN series\, Being…\, which features in-depth conversations with individuals affecting American policy\, politics\, and culture\, giving viewers an understanding of the human being behind the public face. Her digital CNN series\, Badass Women of Washington\, profiles women from various backgrounds and generations to show how they have shattered glass ceilings on their way up the ranks. Her CNN Special Report Rising Hate: Antisemitism in America is an in-depth look at how antisemitism\, once the hate of extremists\, became mainstream and explores ways to curb it.  \nBash won the Radio and Television Correspondents Association's Joan S. Barone Award for her original reporting on a STOCK Act loophole that led Congress to pass legislation to close it. Du Bois Day\, Monday\, February 23\, and will observe the day with an abbreviated Festival program via Zoom. The Du Bois Legacy Festival organizers will be reading excerpts of Dr. Du Bois’ 1926 essay Criteria for Black Art\, with an African dance and drumming presentation led by Sister Noel Staples-Freeman & Uprising Dance Theater artists Jamemurrell Stanley and Brandon Guillermo and possible selections from vocalists Wanda Houston\, a recent recipient of the Du Bois Award from the Berkshire County NAACP\, and Dr. MaryNell Morgan-Brown\, PhD. with a musical interpretation/selection of the “Sorrow Songs” of Dr. Du Bois’ Souls of Black Folk. Rev. Dr. Cheryl Townsend Gilkes will close us out with her keynote address. Dr. Townsend Gilkes is the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Professor of Sociology and African American Studies Emerita at Colby College\, and a Hutchins Fellow at the W.E.B. Du Bois Research Institute at Harvard University. Her scholarly interests include African American women\, religion\, social change\, and the legacy of W. E. B. Du Bois in the fields of sociology\, African American studies\, and religious studies. Her research\, teaching\, and writing have specifically focused on the role of African American women in generating social change. After the keynote\, there will be a moderated question-and-answer session with Legacy Committee member Dr. Alexandria Russell.

Her performance earned her nominations for a Tony Award for Lead Actress and a Drama League Award. She also won the Outer Critics Circle Award in the category of Outstanding Actress in a Musical. Lauren’s past theater credits include Exit the King on Broadway\, Lincoln Center Theater’s Awake and Sing!\, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet and Ophelia in Hamlet at The Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park. On the feature side\, Lauren can be seen in the MAX original mystery-thriller Caddo Lake alongside Dylan O’Brien and Eliza Scanlen\, Stephan Gyllenhaal’s comedy Grassroots\, and as Mindy in the Nataile Portman drama The Other Woman. On the small screen\, Ambrose is well known for her role of Claire Fisher throughout all five seasons on HBO’s iconic series Six Feet Under\, for which she earned two Primetime Emmy Award nominations. The series was nominated for five SAG Awards\, of which the ensemble won twice. On Broadway\, he has appeared in Manhattan Theatre Club’s revival of Translations\, the musical Titanic\, The Tempest\, and Caroline\, or Change\, the Drama Desk award-winning musical by Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori. Off- Broadway he has appeared at the Public Theater\, Playwright’s Horizons\, Roundabout\, CSC and others.  His additional screen credits include Lincoln\, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver\, Obliterated\, Waco: The Aftermath\,  and 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. Upcoming projects include Hershey and Percy Jackson and the Olympians. \nWhen you think of Sonia Manzano\, you immediately think of children and television. Her most recent accomplishment was creating a children’s program\, Alma’s Way\, for PBS Kids. The series has won two Imagen Awards for Best Youth Programing\, a 2022 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Preschool Animated Program\, and a 2023 NAACP nomination for an Image Award. But what Ms. Manzano is best known for performing the role of Maria on Sesame Street for 44 seasons\, where her work affected the lives of millions of parents and children and garnered her two Emmy Award nominations in addition to the National Academy of Arts and Science’s Lifetime Achievement Daytime Emmy in 2016.  As a writer for the show\, she took home 15 Emmys. In 2022\, Manzano was honored with the Beacon Award from PBS. She is also an author whose most recent Scholastic novel\, Coming Up Cuban\, set in 1959\, follows the lives of four children who represent different intersections of race and class during the Cuban Revolution. \nJane Curtin has appeared on Broadway in Noises Off\, Candida\, and Our Town. Amplifying the performance’s themes of workers’ contributions to the transcontinental railroad’s construction and the railroad as a conveyance and co-mingling of their cultures\, Dr. Camesha Scruggs will speak on the experiences of African American railroad workers. From railroad construction through employment as porters\, the railroad offered a door towards upward mobility and a path of migration of the Black community but did not come without human costs.  \nDr. Camesha Scruggs is an Assistant Professor of History at Central Connecticut State University. Her research fields include US and African American History. Not only is she recognized as the foremost pipa player in the United States\, but she is also celebrated as an accomplished composer\, educator\, and one of the most prominent instrumentalists of traditional Chinese music. She has premiered hundreds of new works for the pipa\, while spearheading multimedia projects to both preserve and create awareness of China’s ancient musical traditions. Her adventurous spirit and virtuosity have led to collaborations across artistic disciplines\, allowing her to reach wider audiences as she works to cross cultural and musical borders.  \nAbout Sandeep Das: A Guggenheim Fellow\, Sandeep Das is one of the leading Tabla virtuosos in the world today. Since his debut concert at the age of 17 with legendary Sitar player Ravi Shankar\, Das has built a prolific international reputation spanning over three decades. He has collaborated with top musicians\, ensembles\, and orchestras from all over the world\, and his original compositions have been performed in 50+ countries. Das is the founder of Harmony and Universality through Music (HUM)\, a nonprofit organization in India that has promoted global understanding through music performance and provided learning opportunities and scholarships for visually-impaired children with artistic potential since 2009.  His most recent project\, Transcending Borders One Note at a Time\, launched in 2020 to widespread international acclaim\, and seeks to harness the power of music to create positive social change.  \nAbout Anthony Cheung: (Associate Professor of Music\, Brown University): Composer and pianist Anthony Cheung writes music that explores the senses\, a wide palette of instrumental play and affect\, improvisational traditions\, reimagined musical artifacts\, and multiple layers of textual meaning. Described as “gritty\, inventive and wonderfully assured” (San Francisco Chronicle) and praised for its “instrumental sensuality” (Chicago Tribune)\, his music reveals an interest in the ambiguity of sound sources and constantly shifting transformations of tuning and timbre. The first woman elected to this position\, she also serves as the chair of the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation\, which oversees the ministries of the Washington National Cathedral and Cathedral schools. She is an advocate and organizer in support of justice in all its forms\, including racial equity\, gun-violence prevention\, immigration reform\, the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ persons\, and the care of creation. She was consecrated as the ninth bishop of Washington in November 2011. Prior to her election\, she served for 18 years as rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Minneapolis. She is the author of three books\, most recently How We Learn to Be Brave: Decisive Moments in Life and Faith (2023).  \nMarilynne Robinson was the recipient of a 2012 National Humanities Medal\, awarded by President Barack Obama\, for “her grace and intelligence in writing.” The four novels of her acclaimed Gilead series\, each of which were selected for Oprah’s Book Club in 2021\, are Gilead (2004)\, for which she won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Critics Circle Award; Home (2008)\, for which she won the Orange Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize; Lila (2014)\, for which she won the National Book Critics Circle Award; and Jack (2020). Her first novel\, Housekeeping (1980)\, won the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award. Her works of nonfiction include Reading Genesis (2024); What Are We Doing Here? (2018); The Givenness of Things (2015); When I Was a Child I Read Books (2012); Absence of Mind: The Dispelling of Inwardness from the Modern Myth of the Self (2010); The Death of Adam: Essays on Modern Thought (1998); and Mother Country: Britain\, the Welfare State\, and Nuclear Pollution (1989). She taught for many years at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.  \nPaul Elie is a senior fellow in Georgetown University’s Berkley Center for Religion\, Peace\, and World Affairs and a regular contributor to The New Yorker.  His third book\, The Last Supper: Art\, Faith\, Sex\, and Controversy in the 1980s\, was published in May.  He is also the author of The Life You Save May Be Your Own: An American Pilgrimage (2003) and Reinventing Bach: The Search for Transcendence in Sound (2012)\, both of which were National Book Critics Circle Award finalists. He has worked on Douglass for much of his professional life\, and has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize\, the Bancroft Prize\, the Abraham Lincoln Prize\, and the Frederick Douglass Prize\, among others. He is also a professor of practice at the Harvard Kennedy School and was the co-director of its Center for Public Leadership from 2022 to 2024. He is the founder of Bain Capital Double Impact and was its managing partner from 2015 to 2019. Under his leadership as governor\, Massachusetts ranked first in the nation in student achievement\, energy efficiency\, health-care coverage\, veterans’ services\, and entrepreneurship\, and emerged from recession to achieve a 25-year high in employment. He has been a senior executive in two Fortune 50 companies\, a partner in two Boston law firms\, and the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights in the United States Justice Department. He is the founder and honorary chair of the Our Generation Speaks\, founder and honorary chair of Project 351\, and former co-chair of the Future of Tech Commission.
