SUMMARY:Jeff Tweedy Solo with special guest Case Oats
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\n$55 to $85 (plus processing fees)\nMahaiwe Member & Youth Discount Event  \nTicket purchases limited to 8 per transaction  \nMember Sale: \nWednesday\, June 10 at 10am online\, noon via the Box Office  \nPublic Sale: \nFriday\, June 12 at 10am online\, noon via the Box Office  \n$55 Reserved\n$65 Preferred\n$85 Premium   \nMembers receive $5 off each ticket \n$15 ages 30 and under (visit the Box Office or call 413-528-0100\, Wed – Sat\, 12-4pm)  \nA special solo show with Jeff Tweedy\, founding member and frontman of Wilco and one of contemporary music’s most respected songwriters and performers. In addition to 13 Wilco albums\, he has released five solo albums – most recently\, his 30-track “magnum opus” (The New York Times) Twilight Override. A rare chance to experience songs from across his expansive catalog and step inside the world of Twilight Override. \nOpening Act: Case Oats \nTwilight Override Bio by Jeff Tweedy  \nWhen you align yourself with creativity and creation\, you align yourself with something that other people call God. And if you align yourself with creation\, you have automatically taken a side against destruction. You’re on the side of creation. And that does a lot to quell the impulse to destroy.   \nIs the world getting darker? Sure feels like it. What is it? Is it the pervasive nagging toothache of dread that comes with witnessing the disintegration of a country that you thought you knew and understood? A home you still love with a love that could never be taken away\, regardless of how painful that love has become. That sense of decline is hard to ignore\, and it must at least be a part of the shroud I’m trying to uncover. The twilight of an empire seems like a good enough jumping-off point when one is jumping into the abyss.   \nTwilight sure is a pretty word\, though. And the world is filled with former empires\, so maybe that’s not where this dissonance is coming from entirely. Could be how old I’ve managed to become without warning. My own personal Twilight. What ever it is out there (or in there) squeezing this ennui into my day\, it’s fucking overwhelming. It’s difficult to just ignore. Twilight Override is my effort to overwhelm it right back. Here are the songs and sounds and voices and guitars and words that are an effort to let go of some of the heaviness and up the wattage on my own light. My effort to engulf this encroaching nighttime (nightmare) of the soul.   \nWhat I really want to do is grow my heart big enough to love everyone. And if I want a heart to grow big enough to meet this moment\, it requires something expansive. “Like a TRIPLE record!?”\, you ask? Yes! Like a goddamn triple record! I mean…What else do I have but my songs and my family and my friends? What else do any of us have to keep the lights on? How else can I generate my own light? To me any song\, no matter what the subject matter\, can be a point of light and that’s one of the reasons I try and make so many of them. They all have the potential\, even the heaviest music on the Earth has the potential\, to lift someone up. This sounds like a Hallmark card\, but it rocks harder than a Hallmark card.   \nI’m aware the day ends and the sun sets no matter how hard we wish for it to lift itself back out of the ocean. So I guess what we’re really talking about is time. In a way these three records represent the past\, present and future. The darkness comes and goes. But the clock keeps plowing ahead. We all want more. But not more of this particular shitty time. It feels like the clock is camped out at the worst part of the day. Everyone stuck saying goodbye to the future they woke up to. Waiting for it to get dark enough to dream up a new day.   \nTruthfully\, I’ve been doing this for a long time. And I’m not going anywhere. This is the stuff that works for me. I can’t sing and be afraid at the same time. And dreaming at twilight isn’t forbidden. Not quite a daydream and nowhere near a nightmare. Twilight dreaming is a lovely workaround. Killing time with key changes and harmonies. Feel free to join us all here. Not singing into the void or at the void. Just singing. Feeling good. Together. It will do you no harm. Sharing this music with the world is the best I can do.

SUMMARY:Close Encounters With Music: Saluting the Clarinet – Mozart\, Beethoven\, Bartok and Gershwin
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\n\n$35 Balcony / $60 Orchestra (plus processing fees)\nMahaiwe Member Discount Event \nMember Sale: \nWednesday\, August 26 at noon  \nPublic Sale: \nFriday\, August 28 at noon  \nMembers receive $5 off each ticket    \n“Peter and the Wolf” and “Rhapsody in Blue”; in opera it’s a near-protagonist in “The Magic Flute\,” “La Traviata” and “The Barber of Seville” as composers delineate atmosphere and character motifs. It can sing and it can swing.  We are referring of course to the clarinet\, which stars in a program that features Bartók’s “Contrasts\,” written for clarinet legend Benny Goodman and violinist Joseph Szigeti (with Bartók himself playing the piano at the world premiere!); Beethoven’s Trio in B-flat major\, opus 11; Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet\, and some down-home Gershwin.  The program abounds in Hungarian country fiddling and dance melodies\, rich folk fare and jazz\, as well as clarinet and violin pyrotechnics.  The remarkable clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein will leave us all breathless!  He is joined by pianist Michael Chertock\, violinist Xiao-Dong Wang and cellist and artistic director Yehuda Hanani.

SUMMARY:Samantha Bee: How to Survive Menopause
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\n\n$45 – $85 (plus processing fees)\nMahaiwe Member & Youth Discount Event  \nMember Sale: \nWednesday\, August 12 at 10am\, noon via Box Office  \nPublic Sale: \nFriday\, August 14 at 10am\, noon via Box Office  \n$45 Limited Upper Balcony\n$50 Reserved\n$60 Preferred\n$85 Premium  \nMembers receive $5 off each ticket  \n$15 ages 30 and under (visit the Box Office or call 413-528-0100\, Wed – Sat\, 12-4pm)  \nSamantha Bee wants to talk about menopause. She actually doesn’t want to\, but she must. In How To Survive Menopause\, Bee comically shares everything she has learned through the process in an intimate one-woman show\, because everyone needs that best friend who will keep it real for them. Like\, really real. This is a show for anyone who is going through it\, has gone through it\, will be going through it\, or knows someone currently going through it…basically the entire population.  \nAbout Samantha Bee: \nSamantha Bee has quickly established herself as having one of the most unique and sharp comedic voices on television.   \nBorn and raised in Toronto\, Canada\, Bee began her career performing as a member of the all-female sketch comedy troupe The Atomic Fireballs.    \nIn 2003\, Bee joined Comedy Central’s The Daily Show‘s “Best F#@king News Team.” Bee departed The Daily Show in 2015 and currently holds the title for being the longest-serving regular Daily Show correspondent of all time (12 years).    \nIn 2016\, Bee received global recognition from the success of her very own weekly late-night comedy series\, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee\, which premiered in 2016 and ran for seven seasons on TBS. Full Frontal offered a unique satirical take on weekly news and explores other important stories in-depth that have been largely overlooked by more traditional media outlets. Full Frontal received rave reviews\, and the show was picked up by TBS for a full season within weeks of its premiere. In a landscape of male late-night talk show hosts\, critics have appreciated Bee’s “fiery and fierce” delivery (The New York Times) and have embraced Full Frontal as a “daring\, innovative addition to the late-night slate” (Entertainment Weekly).     \nBee is the author of the essay collection I Know I Am\, But What Are You? and has been featured in TIME 100: The Most Influential People.  She is also the host of ‘Full Release\,’ a podcast featuring in-depth conversations with the best and rightest of people about how to navigate the ever-changing world and what to laugh about along the way.   \nBee and her husband Jason Jones also co-created the half-hour comedy series\, The Detour\, which ran for four seasons on TBS. The Detour\, which stars Jones\, was inspired by their personal experiences on family getaways. The show follows Nate (Jones)\, Robin (Natalie Zea) and their two kids\, Delilah and Jared\, for what Nate believes will be the adventure of a lifetime on a road trip to Florida\, which quickly turns into a disaster.   \nIn 2018\, Bee announced her new production company\, Swimsuit Competition\, co-founded with “Full Frontal” producer Kristen Everman. Swimsuit Competition aims to create inclusive\, narrative and documentary television and will develop content for TBS.

SUMMARY:Cowboy Junkies - Celebrating 40 Years and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\n\n$40 to $65 (plus processing fees)\nMahaiwe Members & Youth Discount Event  \n$40 Limited Upper Balcony\n$50 Reserved\n$65 Premium  \nMembers receive $5 off each ticket \n$15 ages 30 and under (visit the Box Office or call 413-528-0100\, Wed – Sat\, 12-4pm)  \n\n“One of the most unique and enduring bands in alternative rock” —All Music \n“Margo Timmins’s voice is as melancholy and enchanting as ever” —The New York Times \n“There’s something that is nearly miraculous about the way Margo Timmins’ beautiful voice fits with those pained lyrics written by her brother Michael Timmins…the result is some truly transformative music.” —The Mercury News \nCowboy Junkies will be performing a career-spanning show from The Trinity Session to their recent album\, Such Ferocious Beauty! \nSometimes revolutions begin quietly. \nIn 1988\, Cowboy Junkies proved that there was an audience waiting for something quiet\, beautiful and reflective. The Trinity Session was like a whisper that cut through the noise — and it was compelling. It stood out in the midst of the flash and bombast that came to define the late 80’s. The now classic recording combined folk\, blues and rock in a way that had never been heard before and went on to sell more than a million copies. \nFormed in Toronto in 1985 with siblings Michael Timmins on guitar\, Margo Timmins on vocals\, Peter Timmins on drums\, and Michael’s lifelong friend Alan Anton on bass\, the band has sparkled over the course of 29 albums. “I’ve known Alan longer than I’ve known Pete\,” says Michael. “We were friends before Pete was born. \nUnlike most long-lasting groups\, Cowboy Junkies have never had a break up or taken a sanity-saving hiatus. There’s an appreciation of each other that keeps them constantly working. “It’s that intimacy and understanding of what each one of us brings to the table\,” says Michael. \nSponsored by \n \n

SUMMARY:Sean Mason Trio
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\n\n$49 General Admission\nCafé table seating  \nMember Sale: \nWednesday\, August 19 at noon  \nPublic Sale: \nFriday\, August 21 at noon  \nSean Mason stands as one of the most compelling and visionary artists to emerge from the jazz tradition in the 21st century—a jazz pianist and composer whose impact extends far beyond the bandstand. A Grammy Award nominee\, Bessie Award winner\, and Bistro Award recipient\, Mason has distinguished himself not merely as a leading voice within the music\, but as a cultural architect reshaping the genre’s relationship with style\, movement\, and artistic identity.  \n\nHis artistry is defined by a rare duality: a deep knowledge of the jazz tradition and a philosophical commitment to the music as a human practice. Mason is drawn to the way jazz holds opposites in suspension—discipline and freedom\, individuality and communion\, thought and instinct—without forcing them into resolution. As Mason notes\, “The beauty of the music is that it can hold contradiction without breaking. It can be refined and raw\, structured and open\, intimate and vast.” For Mason\, jazz is not an act of presentation\, but a condition of discovery\, one in which meaning is formed in real time\, and where musicians and listeners arrive together at something more truthful than either could have produced alone.  \nFrom his roots in Charlotte\, North Carolina to the world stage\, Mason’s trajectory reflects a steady and self-defined evolution. Shaped by formative experiences at Juilliard and within the lineage of the Marsalis tradition\, he has developed a voice that is distinctly his own. Today\, his impact is measured not only by his technical command\, but by the way his influence shapes a new generation\, one that reflects his sensibility in how they hear\, move\, and inhabit the music.  \nMason’s recorded work traces a clear and deliberate artistic evolution. His debut\, The Southern Suite\, introduced a voice marked by depth and clarity\, praised for its “spirit of celebration” and recognized as “a powerful introduction to Mason’s artistry and vision.” From the outset\, critics noted both his maturity and individuality\, describing the work as “forward-looking music” and “a bold statement of purpose from a generational talent.” That trajectory has only deepened. With A Breath of Fresh Air\, Mason arrives fully in his own language: a work widely described as “a sweeping statement of renewal\,” “deeply rooted in tradition and effortlessly self-authentic\,” and “a bold new chapter in Mason’s artistic evolution.” Now widely regarded as “a leading pianist of his generation” and “a singular artistic voice\,” Mason’s work stands as both a continuation and a redefinition of the art form.

SUMMARY:Close Encounters With Music: Dvorak – In the New World and Old World
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\n$35 Balcony / $60 Orchestra (plus processing fees)\nMahaiwe Member Discount Event \nMember Sale: \nWednesday\, August 26 at noon  \nPublic Sale: \nFriday\, August 28 at noon  \nMembers receive $5 off each ticket    \nAnna Polonsky\, piano; Miranda Cuckson and Giora Schmidt\, violins; Helena Baillie\, viola; Yehuda Hanani\, cello; Tyler Duncan\, baritone  \nFrom humble beginnings to stardom\, Antonin Dvorak straddled two centuries\, two continents\,  rural and urban sensibilities and folk styles inspired by Czech and Slavic traditional music as well as by an American sojourn.  At home in different worlds\, his sublime String Quartet No. 12  "the American" was composed in Spillville Iowa during a blissful vacation\, and legitimized utilizing folklore\, spirituals\, and vernacular art as material for the next generation of American classical composers. The Piano Quintet\, a masterwork of Romantic-era chamber music\, stands as one of the twin peaks of the repertoire written for piano and string quartet (Brahms's Quintet being the other!).  Brahmsian depth\, Eastern European folk flavor and sheer melodic beauty characterize this joyful work.  Also\, a taste of Dvorak's vocal output with selections from his Biblical Songs\, the Gypsy Songs cycle and others reflecting his abiding affection for Czech and Bohemian culture.

SUMMARY:Close Encounters With Music: World Premiere – Metamorphosis\, Love
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\n\n$35 Balcony / $60 Orchestra (plus processing fees)\nMahaiwe Member Discount Event \nMember Sale: \nWednesday\, August 26 at noon  \nPublic Sale: \nFriday\, August 28 at noon  \nMembers receive $5 off each ticket    \nJorge Martin\, Kenji Bunch\,  \nOmar Najmi\, tenor;  Dana Varga\, soprano; Samuel  Solomon and Nancy Zeltsman\, percussion;  Max  Levinson\, piano;  Yehuda Hanani\, cello  \nLoss\, remembrance\, joyous recollection\, metamorphosis and love.  These are universal themes and a progression of states of emotion that animate the music and texture of the program.  A work of shattering intensity\, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio was written in response to the composer’s grief at  losing his beloved teacher\, Nikolai Rubinstein\, and at the same time recollecting the happy moments spent in his company.  It is elegiac and cathartic\, as is the newest CEWM commission from Jorge Martin\, Metamorphosis: Love\, that gives the program its name. The Poet/protagonist role is sung by a tenor in dialogue with his Muse\, sung by soprano\, which in the end becomes Music itself. The accompanying ensemble is cello\, piano\, marimba and vibraphone.  A companion piece (narrator\, cello and percussion) is a 2015 CEWM commission from Kenji Bunch\, written to a Shakespeare sonnet of desire and longing.  Plus art songs from Schubert\, Brahms\, Faure\, Poulenc and Finzi.  It’s all about transcendence and love.
