SUMMARY:Close Encounters With Music: Vivace Chamber Orchestra – Mozart\, Mendelssohn\, Britten\, Bruch
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS$35 Balcony / $60 Orchestra\nMahaiwe Member Discount Event\n \n  \nThe Vivace players return! This New York-based chamber music collective shares the aim of performing the greatest works in the repertoire at the highest level. Their program is curated to showcase both unity of ensemble and rare musicianship. Looking back\, Mozart's Adagio and Fugue in C minor employs Bach's contrapuntal style but pushes into daring\, unexpected harmonies that sound as though they were composed a century later. Mendelssohn's miraculous Octet in E-flat major bursts with youthful verve and brilliance. At just 16\, he directed in the score that "This Octet must be played by all the instruments in symphonic orchestral style." Britten's Simple Symphony movements reveal his sense of fun and wit\, while Max Bruch's Kol Nidrei speaks in a universal voice—moving from supplication to promise and redemption.  \nVivace Chamber Orchestra\nYehuda Hanani\, cello

A masterwork of German expressionist cinema meets a live\, klezmer-infused score in a vibrant feast for the eyes and ears. Paul Wegener’s pioneering 1920 silent horror film Der Golem was so popular on release that it sold out movie houses in both Germany and America for months\, inspired Golem-themed operettas\, and became a critical influence on the 1931 film Frankenstein. Drawn from a medieval Jewish legend\, Der Golem tells the tale of the Jews of 16th-century Prague\, who create a giant figure out of clay to protect themselves—only to see it turn on them with violence. To heighten the atmosphere\, Israeli-born composer Betty Olivero weaves together traditional Yiddish folk tunes and Jewish liturgical music into a haunting score for clarinet and strings. Colorful\, ominous\, and electrifying\, the experience of hearing live musicians accompany the action on the big screen promises to be unforgettable.  \nThe Avalon String Quartet: Blaise Magnière\, violin; Marie Wang\, violin; Anthony Devroye\, viola; Cheng-Hou Lee\, cello\nSaerom Kim\, clarinet; Jonathan Yates\, conductor  \nThe Avalon String Quartet “—an ensemble that invites you—ears\, mind\, and spirit—into its music.” — Chicago Tribune  \n

This creative conversation will be moderated by composer and scholar\, Anthony Cheung.  \nWu Man and Sandeep Das will perform as part of Silkroad Ensemble’s “American Railroad” at the Mahaiwe on November 8 (tickets available).  \nPresented in partnership with Colonial Performing Arts Center\, Fairfield University Quick Center for the Arts\, and First Works\, through the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA). \nAbout Silkroad: A Grammy Award-winning musical ensemble\, Silkroad is a collective of artists representing dozens of nationalities\, traditions and ideas\, who use music and art to demonstrate how great beauty can emerge from great difference. The Ensemble strives to engage difference\, sparking radical collaboration and music with a purpose\, for a more hopeful and inclusive world.  \nAbout Wu Man: Wu Man belongs to a rare group of musicians who have redefined the role of their instruments\, in her case\, the pipa\, a pear-shaped\, four-stringed Chinese lute with a rich history spanning centuries. Not only is she recognized as the foremost pipa player in the United States\, but she is also celebrated as an accomplished composer\, educator\, and one of the most prominent instrumentalists of traditional Chinese music. She has premiered hundreds of new works for the pipa\, while spearheading multimedia projects to both preserve and create awareness of China’s ancient musical traditions. Her adventurous spirit and virtuosity have led to collaborations across artistic disciplines\, allowing her to reach wider audiences as she works to cross cultural and musical borders.  \nAbout Sandeep Das: A Guggenheim Fellow\, Sandeep Das is one of the leading Tabla virtuosos in the world today. Since his debut concert at the age of 17 with legendary Sitar player Ravi Shankar\, Das has built a prolific international reputation spanning over three decades. He has collaborated with top musicians\, ensembles\, and orchestras from all over the world\, and his original compositions have been performed in 50+ countries. Das is the founder of Harmony and Universality through Music (HUM)\, a nonprofit organization in India that has promoted global understanding through music performance and provided learning opportunities and scholarships for visually-impaired children with artistic potential since 2009.  His most recent project\, Transcending Borders One Note at a Time\, launched in 2020 to widespread international acclaim\, and seeks to harness the power of music to create positive social change.  \nAbout Anthony Cheung: (Associate Professor of Music\, Brown University): Composer and pianist Anthony Cheung writes music that explores the senses\, a wide palette of instrumental play and affect\, improvisational traditions\, reimagined musical artifacts\, and multiple layers of textual meaning. Described as “gritty\, inventive and wonderfully assured” (San Francisco Chronicle) and praised for its “instrumental sensuality” (Chicago Tribune)\, his music reveals an interest in the ambiguity of sound sources and constantly shifting transformations of tuning and timbre. His music and commissions have been performed at festivals around the world. He was a co-founder of the Talea Ensemble\, performing as a pianist and serving as artistic director. The recipient of a 2016 Guggenheim Fellowship\, he has also received awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (Charles Ives Fellowship and Scholarship) and ASCAP\, and first prize in the Sixth International Dutilleux Competition (2008)\, as well as a Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome (2012).  \nFunded in part by

SUMMARY:Met Opera Live in HD: Bellini's La Sonnambula
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS$25 / $10 ages 21 and under.\nConnectorCare/WIC/EBT Card to Culture*  \nFollowing triumphant Live in HD performances in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette\, Verdi's La Traviata\, and Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor\, Nadine Sierra summits another peak of the soprano repertoire as Amina\, who sleepwalks her way into audiences' hearts in Bellini's poignant tale of love lost and found. In his new production\, Rolando Villazón—the tenor who has embarked on a brilliant second career as a director—retains the opera's original setting in the Swiss Alps but uses its somnambulant plot to explore the emotional and psychological valleys of the mind. Tenor Xabier Anduaga co-stars as Amina's fiancé\, Elvino\, alongside soprano Sydney Mancasola as her rival\, Lisa\, and bass Alexander Vinogradov as Count Rodolfo. Riccardo Frizza takes the podium for one of opera's most ravishing works. This operatic gem from one of the great masters of melody is a benchmark of extraordinary vocalism. The title role of the sleepwalking girl was composed for the greatest diva of the day\, Giuditta Pasta (for whom Bellini also wrote the tragic role of Norma). The part requires a rare combination of innocence\, charm\, and breathtaking vocal virtuosity. Deeper than a comedy\, but in no way a tragedy\, La Sonnambula reaches its conclusion through genuine\, poignant character development\, rather than by intrigue or farce.  \n*We accept ConnectorCare/WIC/EBT cards! Four free tickets to movies or HD broadcasts per individual. Thank you to the donors who make this possible.

Here to expose the essence of their art form with unmatched subtlety and surprise\, the indefatigably disciplined dancers of Rennie Harris Puremovement American Street Dance Theater command the stage with a mixtape of moves from b-boying to Campbell locking to house. Every step tells a story in sync with the rhythm\, honoring hip-hop’s roots while raising the bar to new heights. You can try to shout ’em down\, but you ain’t said Nuttin’ but a Word.  \n“This suite of works challenges the structural integrity of Campbell locking\, house\, hip-hop\, and B-boying. Now that we are a global hip-hop nation\, we seem to have become hip-hop/street dance zealots. This purist attitude has stagnated the natural progression of street dance. Simply put\, we have become elitist about Hip-hop culture. This elitism is due to this generation’s obsession with ‘keeping it real.’ The truth of the matter is this generation will never relive my generation’s era of original dance. My generation defined the three laws of Hip-hop culture: innovation\, individuality\, and creativity. At best\, they can appreciate it\, pay homage to it\, and acknowledge it as the foundational era of hip-hop/street dance it was; in doing that\, they will tap into their individuality\, creativity\, and innovation\, which in turn ensures progress. The work’s title\, Nuttin’ But A Word\, was taken from a cultural phrase used amongst Blacks in the United States. The complete phrase is\, ‘You ain’t said nothing but a word’; loosely translated\, it means\, ‘Your words mean nothing — pay close attention because what I do next will trump anything you have to say.’ Hip-hop/street dance is progressive by design. There is nothing about the three Laws of Hip-Hop that suggests stagnation. Nothing about these laws indicates that we as practitioners of Hip-hop should only adhere to its foundation; it is quite the opposite. Nuttin’ But A Word challenges the Hip-hop puritans at every turn and reminds us that we will not evolve as a form without individuality\, creativity\, and innovation.” – Rennie Harris  \nSponsored by
