The kora\, a 21-stringed plucked instrument with a gourd resonator\, is the traditional instrument accompanying their songs. At the age of 9\, Yacouba started learning the kora and the oral traditions associated with it from his grandfather. By 15\, he was touring the country sharing the stories passed down through his family for centuries. He attended the National Institute of the Arts in Bamako\, where he immediately caught the attention of the music world there and began touring with noted artists and ensembles such as Ami Koita\, Kandia Kouyate\, the Raoul Fulero Ensemble\, and l’Ensemble National du Mali (the orchestra that both his mother and grandmother sang with). Rooted to give back to the community\, Yacouba offers cultural programs and benefit concerts all over the world. SUMMARY:New York Theatre Workshop's Mind the Gap
DESCRIPTION:Workshop: Monday\, August 3 through Friday August 7\nRESERVE FOR PERFORMANCE\n–\nAPPLY TO WORKSHOP\n–\nNew York Theatre Workshop’s Mind the Gap returns to the Mahaiwe this summer\, August 3-7. The intergenerational workshop will take place in the Indigo Room all week long\, culminating in a free public performance in that space on Friday\, August 7 at 7pm.  \nMind the Gap is a weeklong performance workshop that brings together youth and elders to explore identity\, legacy\, and empathy through storytelling and theatre-making. Participants work in intergenerational pairs and as a full ensemble to develop original performance pieces based on their lived experiences. The program culminates in a final invited sharing where participants perform their collaboratively devised work.  \nTo apply\, visit mahaiwe.org/applymtg. Applications are open through July 10 at 5pm. Youth participants are supported through $250 stipends.   \nMind the Gap is facilitated by New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW). NYTW Teaching Artists Noor Hamdi and Psacoya Guinn will lead this year’s workshop.   \nNoor Hamdi \nNoor Hamdi is a New York based actor\, teacher\, and writer. He’s performed on Broadway (Skin of Our Teeth\, directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz)\, Off-Broadway (including Cartography\, directed by Kaneza Schaal)\, regionally\, and internationally\, as well as in various short films (including Sherman\, directed by Darine Hotait) and TV. Noor is always happy to popularize queer and SWANA narratives\, and especially the intersection of the two\, and is currently performing his solo show 2014. They’re also a clown\, circus artist\, polyglot\, gamer\, and eternal academic.   \nEmma Yaniger \nEmma Yaniger (she/her) — Emma is a theatremaker\, educator\, singer\, and writer. She earned her BFA in Drama (Musical Theatre & Physical Theatre) at NYU Tisch. Emma is a founding member of Soft Brain Theatre Company\, a collaborative ensemble of clowns who devise original musicals and plays together. A recent addition to the NYTW team\, she’s thrilled to exercise her passion for empowering others through theatre through programs like Mind the Gap.\n–\nNew York Theatre Workshop is a community of artists and audience members who believe in the transformative power of theatre. Some are love songs\, some comedic\, some are bittersweet\, some just bitter. He is not above a cheap joke\, and nothing is beneath him. Songs will include the bossa nova favorite “Sand Up in My Crack\,” the enchanting jazz waltz\, “I Wish I Was Married to Your Wife\,” the historic actor/prison/chain gang song\, “Never Going to Work Again\,” and not many more. The songs are musical\, and short enough to accommodate the most limited attention span. Someone else will be playing the piano\, so don’t worry. This show will be just long enough that exactly when you are thinking\, “It’s time to go\,” the last song will be finishing and your coat will be waiting for you at the door. “Thank God\, David Rasche is finally doing a show\,“ someone might have said\, maybe. It’s a performance you will be happy to have seen.  \nDavid Rasche began his career at Chicago’s famed Second City\, where he worked with John Candy\, Bill Murray and others. His many TV appearances include Columbo and VEEP\, and\, most recently\, Dying for Sex\, with Michelle Williams. He has also appeared in movies\, such as In the Loop\, directed by Armando Iannucci\, who also did VEEP\, and About My Father with Robert DeNiro. He has appeared both on Broadway and off.

DESCRIPTION:RESERVE\n\nFREE with reservations  \nThe W. E. B. Du Bois Center at UMass Amherst and The Du Bois Freedom Center Present a special evening celebrating the lives\, works\, and friendship of American scholar-activist W. E. B. Du Bois and the British composer\, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. The two first met in 1900 at the first Pan-African Conference in London and shared a bond centered on the celebration of Black history\, culture\, and identity. They forged a firm friendship which lasted until Coleridge-Taylor’s untimely death in 1912. The event will begin with a group reading of ‘The Immortal Child’ from W. E. B. Du Bois’\, Darkwater (1920)\, which he penned in memory and tribute to his late friend.    \nThis reading will be followed by a performance of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Clarinet Quintet in F-sharp Minor\, which displays both his virtuosity as a performer and his adoption of musical motifs and ideas from the African Diaspora. Our evening will conclude with an opportunity for audience members to engage in questions and conversation with the musicians and representatives from both the W. E. B. Du Bois Center at UMass Amherst and the Du Bois Freedom Center.  \nMUSIC PERFORMANCE:\nClarinet Quintet in F-sharp Minor\, Op. 10 / Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1895)\nI. Allegro energico\nII. Allegro agitato \nMUSICIANS:\nHannah Berube – Clarinet\nHannah Collins – Cello\nClara Lyon – Violin\nHyobi Sim – Violin\nElijah Wilson – Violin \nFeatured musicians come with experience from the Lydian String Quartet\, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra\, New England Repertory Orchestra\, and A Far Cry.  \nW.E. B. Du Bois (1868 – 1963) Born in Great Barrington\, Massachusetts three years after the end of the American Civil War\, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois rose to prominence initially as a scholar and then as an international leader in the fight for social justice and racial equality. Du Bois gained his undergraduate degree from Fisk University before becoming the first Black man to gain a PhD from Harvard University. \nHis early work in the emerging science of sociology helped establish this discipline in American academia and brought Du Bois to Atlanta University in the 1890s. It was here\, however\, that Du Bois once again encountered the violent racism of the American South which brought the realization that scholarship alone would not be enough – he must become a public intellectual leader as well. In 1903 Du Bois published the sensational volume of essays\, The Souls of Black Folk\, which remains a classic of American literary depictions of Black life in America. He helped found the Niagara movement in 1905 and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. He was the editor of the NAACP’s mouthpiece\, The Crisis\, for almost a quarter of a century.  \nDu Bois travelled the world advocating for the rights of the oppressed everywhere. He helped convene the Pan-African Congresses following the First World War and he was active in the struggle for peace during the Cold War. He died in 1963 in Accra\, capital of the newly-independent Ghana. Throughout his long life\, Du Bois never stopped producing writing and scholarship that continues to inform and inspire in equal measure long after his passing. The University of Massachusetts Amherst are proud to be the custodians of Du Bois’s archival papers which reside in the Robert S. Cox Special Collections & University Archives Research Center.  \nSamuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) Born in Holborn\, Central London\, in 1875 to an English mother and a father who originally came from Sierra Leone\, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor rose to fame as a composer in his early twenties. One of his most notable pieces from his early career was Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast\, which he debuted in 1898. His influences were many\, but included traditional African music and Coleridge-Taylor took great pride in his own African heritage. In 1900 he participated in the First Pan-African Conference\, held in London\, as the youngest delegate. It was here that he met\, and formed a friendship with\, W. E. B. Du Bois.  \nSamuel Coleridge-Taylor wrote the Clarinet Quintet in response to a remark by his composition professor that it would be impossible to write a piece for the instrumentation that was not influenced by Johannes Brahms’ monumental Clarinet Quintet. In 1895 while still a student at the Royal Academy of Music\, Coleridge-Taylor rose to the challenge\, creating a work using a highly skilled and daring treatment of the instrumentation that drew upon his own rich musical heritage. The first documented 17 performances of Coleridge-Taylor’s Clarinet Quintet in the United States occurred in 1906 on his second US tour. Members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra performed the work on a program alongside selections from his Op. 57 Sorrow Songs and Op. 59 Twenty-four Negro Melodies. Coleridge-Taylor accompanied the great Black American composer and baritone Harry Burleigh\, who had famously succeeded in bringing spirituals to the American classical music stage. Notably\, Coleridge-Taylor donated proceeds from this performance to Atlanta University\, where W. E. B. Du Bois was teaching.

DESCRIPTION:RESERVE\n\nFREE\, Reservations required  \nExhibition at 5pm; Moderated conversation at 6pm \nThe Du Bois Freedom Center is partnering with the Scottsboro Boys Museum in Scottsboro\, Alabama\, to host the museum’s traveling exhibit at its 309 Main Street office from February 10 through late April. As part of the opening week\, the Center will present Reflections on Justice: W.E.B. Du Bois\, the Scottsboro Boys\, and Legacies of Injustice at the Mahaiwe theater’s Indigo Room—a featured public conversation examining W.E.B. Du Bois’s and the NAACP’s involvement in the Scottsboro case\, the legal strategies developed within the Black Freedom Struggle\, and the continuing relevance of those strategies today. The Scottsboro Boys Museum traveling exhibit will also be available for public viewing at the venue before and after the program.  \nThe program will feature Dr. Thomas Reidy\, Executive Director of the Scottsboro Boys Museum\, in conversation with Dr. Whitney Battle-Baptiste\, Director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Center at UMass Amherst\, moderated by Marcus P. Smith\, History and Archival Fellow at the Du Bois Freedom Center. Sponsored by the Du Bois Freedom Center in conjunction with the Scottsboro Boys Exhibit\, the program centers on one of the most notorious legal injustices in U.S. history—the 1931 false accusation of nine Black teenagers known as the Scottsboro Boys—and reflects on the legacy of the late Sheila Washington\, founder of the Scottsboro Boys Museum. The discussion will examine Washington’s pivotal role in securing the men’s posthumous exoneration through the 2013 Scottsboro Boys Act\, as well as the museum’s ongoing work addressing public memory\, accountability\, and justice.

He was named one of Complex Magazine’s ‘Comics to Watch Under 30\,’ although is now 38\, and one of New York Comedy Festival’s ‘Comics to Watch\,’ but they did not specify any age boundaries. He is a producer of the long-standing New York showcase Comedians You Should Know NYC and a regular at the world-famous Comedy Cellar. With six stand-up albums and three specials under his belt\, including the critically acclaimed Big Break\, David delivers comedy that’s “smart and engaging” (The New York Times) and “endlessly watchable” (Humorism). In addition to stand-up\, he is a five-time reoccurring guest on the popular storytelling podcast Risk! and a producer of the traveling outdoor storytelling series Campfire. David currently performs nationwide while working out a niche in New York’s legendary comedy scene and sometimes he’ll eat fries off your plate. He feels bad about that. He’s sorry… I’m sorry. Growing up\, this Kentucky Jew made everyone laugh at her bat mitzvah\, and the rest is history. Today\, her comedy is a fun mesh of unique\, personal stories mixed with witty and wry observations.     \nDescribed as “a sly young comic from Kentucky” by The New York Times\, Ariel has also been featured in Rolling Stone\, The Washington Post\, and on Good Morning America. She was named as Paste Magazine’s Best Comedians of 2022.  \nAfter catching Jimmy Kimmel’s attention with a viral stand-up clip that displayed her cool\, calm\, and hilarious composure\, he invited Ariel to make her late night television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
