Great Barrington, Mass.—Cuban-Venezuelan musician César Orozco will perform a free concert at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center on Saturday, September 26 at 7 p.m., coinciding with the 30th Anniversary of Festival Latino of the Berkshires. Orozco will perform with his new 8-piece band, SonAhead.
Advance registration is required at mahaiwe.org or through the Box Office at 14 Castle Street or 413-528-0100, open Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. Registration is open now.
This show is presented as part of the Mahaiwe’s Partnering with Latinx Communities Program in collaboration with SCAN (Spanish-language Community Advisory Network) and sponsored by: Avangrid Foundation, Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation’s Arts Build Community Fund, Dr. Robert C. and Tina Sohn Foundation, Greylock Federal Credit Union, and Leslie & Stephen Jerome.
About Cézar Orozco
César Orozco is a Cuban born pianist, vocalist, violinist, composer, arranger, producer, and educator based in the New York City Tri-State Area. Orozco spent 14 years in Venezuela, where he developed an important and prolific career. In 2012, Orozco moved to the United States and enrolled with a full tuition Assistantship to The Peabody Institute of John Hopkins University in Baltimore, where he earned a Graduate Performance Diploma (GPD) in Jazz Piano. He also holds a degree in Violin Performance and Ensemble Conducting from the National School of Arts in Havana, Cuba. Some of the artists he has worked with include Paquito D’Rivera, Pedrito Martinez, Gary Thomas, Alex Norris, Mike Stern, Troy Roberts, Paul Bollenback, Albita Rodriguez, Tony Succar, Guaco, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Luis Enrique, and Giovanni Hidalgo just to name a few. Orozco has participated in more than 80 albums including seven on his own. He is a 2025 Latin Grammy winner for Best Arrangement with 2 previous nominations (2019 & 2021) in the same category. He is also a Cubadisco and Independent Music Award winner. Orozco has developed an innovative approach to a fusion of Venezuelan and Cuban traditional music with Jazz along with his project Kamarata Jazz. His newest band SonAhead speaks to its essence: a fusion of Cuban son and timba, with elements of modern jazz and electronic music, where, in addition to his work on piano, arrangements and compositions, Orozco takes center stage as the lead vocalist. Orozco is currently part of the Tony Award-winning production of Buena Vista Social Club on Broadway as a sub-conductor and pianist.

SonAhead is the latest project of Cuban-Venezuelan pianist, vocalist, composer, arranger, violinist, and educator Cesar Orozco, who is also a 2025 Latin Grammy winner for Best Arrangement. In addition to his work on piano, arrangements, and compositions, Orozco takes center stage as the lead vocalist, marking an exciting new chapter in his career.
The name SonAhead speaks to its essence: a fusion of Cuban son—a foundational genre for what we now recognize as salsa—infused with elements of modern jazz, electronic music, and Cuban timba, a vibrant style that emerged in the 1990s which has deeply influenced Orozco since his teenage years. Listeners will find echoes of legendary timba groups like NG La Banda, El Médico de la Salsa, and Isaac Delgado woven throughout the music of SonAhead.
While stepping into the role of lead vocalist may seem novel to those who have followed Orozco’s career as a pianist over the past two decades, it’s not his first foray into this territory. During his studies at the National School of Arts (ENA) in Cuba, he formed his own band, serving as bandleader, arranger, composer, and vocalist.
About Festival Latino of the Berkshires
Festival Latino of the Berkshires is a nonprofit organization that began 1995 as an annual event centered on celebrating Latino heritage that immigrated to the Berkshires. Over the past 30 years, the festival has expanded its purpose and incorporated an educational component aligned with the United States celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15). Today our mission is to showcase and educate the community of the Hispanic/ Latino heritage who preserve their cultural roots through the performance arts events, and traditions locally and in the great New England area.
About the Mahaiwe
Located in downtown Great Barrington, Mass., the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center is the year-round presenter of world-class music, dance, theater, opera, classic films, Live in HD broadcasts, and arts education programs for the southern Berkshires and neighboring regions. The intimate jewel box of a theater opened in 1905. Since 2005, the performing arts center has hosted over 2,500 events and welcomed over 600,000 people through its doors. Orozco pasó 14 años en Venezuela, donde desarrolló una carrera importante y prolífica. SonAhead es el último proyecto del pianista, vocalista, compositor, arreglista, violinista y educador cubano-venezolano César Orozco, quien también es ganador del Latin Grammy 2025 al Mejor Arreglo. Además de su trabajo en piano, arreglos y composiciones, Orozco ocupa el rol protagónico de vocalista principal, marcando un nuevo y emocionante capítulo en su carrera. El nombre SonAhead habla de su esencia: una fusión de son cubano—un género fundamental de lo que hoy reconocemos como salsa—impregnada con elementos de jazz moderno, música electrónica y timba cubana, un estilo vibrante que surgió en los años 90 y que ha influido profundamente en Orozco desde su adolescencia. Los oyentes encontrarán ecos de legendarios grupos de timba como NG La Banda, El Médico de la Salsa e Isaac Delgado entretejidos en la música de SonAhead. Festival Latino de los Berkshires
Festival Latino of the Berkshires es una organización sin fines de lucro que comenzó en 1995 como un evento anual centrado en celebrar la herencia latina que emigró a los Berkshires.
