Robert Schumann’s setting of Heinrich Heine’s song cycle Dichterliebe—A Poet’s Love—is spellbinding. Love and betrayal are rendered with such intimacy that the boundary between singer and listener disappears. It is Romanticism at its most exquisite. Mendelssohn, too, was captivated by Heine’s genius and set several of his poems, including “On Wings of Song.” His majestic Piano Trio in D minor expresses his belief in a harmonious, enlightened world and the triumph of beauty. The charismatic baritone Tyler Duncan, joined by collaborator pianist Adam Golka, brings profound psychological insight to the text. With a voice described as “honey-coloured and warm, yet robust and commanding” (The Globe and Mail), baritone Tyler Duncan has performed worldwide to great acclaim in both opera and concert repertoire, including major roles at the Met, Spoleto Festival and with Handel and Haydn Society.
