JazzReach Up-Close is a single or multi-day series of comprehensive in-school presentations for students in grades 4 – 6 designed to complement and enhance JazzReach’s school- time matinee performances for young audiences. The “Up Close” series features classroom performances by JazzReach’s resident ensemble, Metta Quintet, and highly interactive instruction that further elucidates:
• The fundamental ingredients of music and the function and role of each instrumentalist in the jazz ensemble
• What jazz is, where it comes from, what makes it uniquely American and how it has become a global music
• Music as a language: how musicians translate years of acquired skill, technique and vocabulary into soulful, heartfelt artistic expression
• Improvisation and creativity in music, the arts and everyday life
The series can be offered as either a preparatory or follow-up opportunity for teachers and students scheduled to attend a JazzReach school-time matinee who desire a more thorough, in-depth educational experience.
