Eight towns served by the Berkshire Hills and Southern Berkshire Regional school districts are about to convene special town meetings this fall to vote up or down a proposal to merge the districts.
The Berkshire Eagle and Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center are convening an informational forum on the issue to help educate voters on the proposal. The forum is Wednesday, October 4, at the Mahaiwe, 14 Castle St., Great Barrington. The forum gets underway at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Our forum will be led by Eagle Executive Editor Kevin Moran and will feature members of the Eight Town Regional School District Planning Board, the group that formed in March 2020 to study a merger in the face of declining enrollment and rising operating costs.
The eight towns are Great Barrington, Stockbridge and West Stockbridge, served by the Berkshire Hills Regional School District, and Alford, Egremont, Monterey, New Marlborough and Sheffield, served by the Southern Berkshire Regional School District.
The forum is free, but registration is required. General admission is first-come, first-served.
