Great Barrington, Mass.—The Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center has added five screenings to its ongoing schedule: a free film in Spanish, El gran León (2018), on October 21, featuring a live post-show appearance from cast and crew; Beetlejuice (1988) over Halloween weekend on October 28; the timeless family favorite Mary Poppins (1964) on November 25; an HD broadcast, Titanic: The Musical, on December 1; and an evening with Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983) on loop, for free, during the Great Barrington Holiday Shop, Sip, and Stroll, on December 9.
The new titles join Muppet Christmas Carol (1992), December 15, and It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), December 22, among Mahaiwe’s upcoming screened programming.
The Mahaiwe will present Peruvian film El gran León, followed by a live, post-show Q&A with the two leads, Carlos Alcántara and Patricia Portocarrero, and director, Ricardo Maldonado, on Saturday, October 21 at 7 p.m., for free. The 2018 film will be screened in Spanish, with English subtitles. León Godoy is 4-feet, 6-inches tall and intimidated by no one. Ivana Cornejo is a beautiful, divorced lawyer whom he meets by chance. An immediate connection arises, and both must face and combat social prejudices — their own and others’ — to verify that great love stories always present themselves in the least imagined ways. The theater will screen Beetlejuice from 1988 on Saturday, October 28 at 7 p.m. Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice is fantasy-comedy cult classic featuring Micheal Keaton as the titular eccentric spirit, and Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as a married-couple-turned-ghosts in pursuit of peace in the afterlife. The Mahaiwe will screen Mary Poppins from 1964 over Thanksgiving weekend on Saturday, November 25 at 3 p.m. Julie Andrews plays the title role, an adventuresomenanny, alongside Dick Van Dyke as Bert the chimneysweep, in this beloved American musical classic. The film is recognized for its innovation in combining live action with animation. Tickets are $8 or $5 for ages 12 and under. Sponsored by BUCHWALD.
The theater will present Titanic: The Musical in HD on Friday, December 1 at 7 p.m. Based on real people aboard the most legendary ship in the world, Titanic: The Musical is “breathtaking” (the Guardian) and “magnificent” (the Telegraph), a stunning and stirring production focusing on the hopes, dreams, and aspirations of her passengers, who each boarded with stories and personal ambitions of their own. Music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone – this pair has collectively won an Academy Award, an Emmy Award, an Olivier Award and three Tony Awards. Tickets are $17 or $10 for ages 21 and under.
The theater will screen Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983) on the hour and half hour , from 4:30 to 7 p.m., during Great Barrington’s holiday stroll on Saturday, December 9. Disney’s favorite mouse and friends retell Charles Dickens’ Christmas classic in this animated short. Attendance is free, no registration required. Sponsored by BUCHWALD.
