Great Barrington, Mass.—The Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center will screen classic movies and HD broadcasts from London’s National Theatre this winter: Funny Girl (1968) on January 13, Skylight (London’s National Theatre in HD) on January 20, Groundhog Day (1993) on February 2, Romeo & Juliet (London’s National Theatre in HD) on February 10, When Harry Met Sally (1989) on February 14, and Vanya (London’s National Theatre in HD) on February 24. 

These programs join an already lively screenings schedule with previously announced events Titanic: The Musical (in HD) on December 1, Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983) on December 9, Waitress: The Musical (in HD) on December 10, The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) on December 15, It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) on December 22, and seven remaining titles in the Met Opera’s Live in HD 2023-24 Season.  

The Mahaiwe will screen the movie Funny Girl on Saturday, January 13 at 7 p.m. In an Oscar-winning turn, Barbara Streisand plays Fanny Brice, comedian and entertainer in the early 1900s, opposite Omar Sharif as Nick Arnstein, in William Wyler’s biographical musical comedy-drama from 1968. The film follows Brice’s life and career before and after the first World War and includes the hits “People” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade.” Rated G. Sponsored by Buchwald. The theater will present Skylight from London’s National Theatre in HD on Saturday, January 20 at 7 p.m. Returning to the big screen after nearly ten years, Bill Nighy (Living) and Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman) feature in the critically acclaimed revival of David Hare’s play, directed by Stephen Daldry (The Audience). On a bitterly cold London evening, schoolteacher Kyra receives an unexpected visit from her former lover. As the evening progresses, the two attempt to rekindle their once passionate relationship only to find themselves locked in a dangerous battle of opposing ideologies and mutual desires. Tickets are $17 or $10 for ages 21 and under. 

The theater will screen Groundhog Day on Friday, February 2 at 7 p.m. Bill Murray is Phil Connors, a TV weather reporter caught in a time loop reliving February 2 every day as he pursues romance with his news producer (Andie MacDowell) alongside his cameraman (Chris Elliott). Harold Ramis directs this comedic favorite from 1993. Rated PG. Sponsored by Buchwald. Tickets are $8 or $5 for ages 12 and under.  

The Mahaiwe will present Romeo & Juliet from London’s National Theatre in HD ahead of Valentine’s Day on Saturday, February 10 at 7 p.m. This bold new screening brings to life the remarkable backstage spaces of the National Theatre in which desire, dreams and destiny collide to make Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy sing in an entirely new way. Jessie Buckley (Wild Rose, Judy) and Josh O’Connor (The Crown, God’s Own Country) play Juliet and Romeo. The award-winning cast includes Tamsin Greig, Fisayo Akinade, Adrian Lester, Lucian Msamati, Deborah Findlay. Tickets are $17 or $10 for ages 21 and under. 

The Mahaiwe will screen When Harry Met Sally on Valentine’s Day, Wednesday, February 14 at 7 p.m. Billy Crystal is opposite Meg Ryan in this 1989 romantic comedy written by Nora Ephron and directed by Rob Reiner. The film follows two characters through 12 years of chance encounters and an evolving relationship. Rated R. Sponsored by Buchwald. Tickets are $8. 

The theater will screen Vanya from London’s National Theatre in HD on Saturday, February 24 at 7 p.m. Andrew Scott (Fleabag) brings multiple characters to life in Simon Stephens’ (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) radical new version of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. Hopes, dreams, and regrets are thrust into sharp focus in this one-man adaptation which explores the complexities of human emotions. Tickets are $17 or $10 for ages 21 and under.
