The Mahaiwe will screen Life of Pi from London’s National Theatre in HD on Friday, November 14 at 7 p.m. Puppetry, magic and storytelling combine in a unique, Olivier Award-winning stage adaptation of the best-selling novel. After a cargo ship sinks in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean, a 16-year-old boy named Pi is stranded on a lifeboat with four other survivors – a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan and a Royal Bengal tiger. Time is against them, nature is harsh, who will survive? Filmed live in London’s West End and featuring state-of-the-art visuals, the epic journey of endurance and hope is brought to life in a breath-taking new way. Rated PG-13. Tickets are $17 or $10 for ages 21 and under.
The Mahaiwe will present the animated short film Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983) on loop for free during Great Barrington’s annual Holiday Stroll, Saturday, December 13 from 4 to 7 p.m. Familiar Disney characters retell Charles Dickens’ timeless story of holiday spirit. This program will take place at the Mahaiwe’s newly opened Indigo Room next door to the theater at 20 Castle Street. Rated G. No reservations required.
The Mahaiwe will continue its annual tradition of screening It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) for free on December 19 at 7 p.m. Frank Capra directs James Stewart and Donna Reed in this classic holiday favorite about community, love, and hope. Rated PG. No reservations required.
The Mahaiwe will present The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Klay from the Met Opera Live in HD on Saturday, January 24 at 1 p.m. Due to popular demand, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, recorded live earlier this season, will be presented as a special screening. In this exhilarating new adaptation of Michael Chabon’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, two Jewish cousins invent an anti-fascist superhero and launch their own comic-book series, hoping to recruit America into the fight against Nazism. Incorporating scintillating electronic elements and a variety of musical styles, composer Mason Bates’s eclectic score moves seamlessly among the three worlds of Gene Scheer’s libretto: Nazi-occupied Prague, the bustling streets of New York City, and the technicolor realm of comic-book fantasy. Bartlett Sher’s production provides spectacular visuals to match, with towering sets and proscenium-filling projections designed by 59 Studio. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met premiere-production, with baritone Andrzej Filończyk as the artist Joe Kavalier, who flees Czechoslovakia and arrives at the Brooklyn doorstep of writer Sam Clay, sung by tenor Miles Mykkanen. Rated PG-13. Tickets are $25 or $10 for ages 21 and under.
The Mahaiwe will screen Hamlet from London’s National Theatre in HD on Saturday, January 31 at 7 p.m. Trapped between duty and doubt, surrounded by power and privilege, young Prince Hamlet dares to ask the ultimate question – you know the one. Olivier Award-winner Hiran Abeysekera (The Father and the Assassin, Life of Pi) is Hamlet in this fearless, contemporary take on Shakespeare’s famous tragedy. National Theatre Deputy Artistic Director Robert Hastie (Standing at the Sky’s Edge, Operation Mincemeat) directs this sharp, stylish and darkly funny reimagining. Rated PG-13. Tickets are $17 or $10 for ages 21 and under.
