FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Great Barrington, Mass.—The Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center has added two new screenings from London’s National Theatre and two classic films to its year-round schedule: Dear England on March 30 and The Motive and the Cue on April 26; and The Shawshank Redemption (1994) on April 6 and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983) on May 4.

The theater will screen Dear England on Saturday, March 30 at 6:30 p.m. The country that gave the world football has since delivered a painful pattern of loss. Why can’t England’s men win at their own game? Joseph Fiennes’ portrayal of Gareth Southgate is “pitch-perfect” (Time Out) in this “thrilling” (Sunday Times) new play by James Graham, with set design by Es Devlin. Graham reunites with director Rupert Goold, following their acclaimed productions of Tammy Faye and Ink, in this gripping “new stage epic” (Telegraph) about both nation and game. Tickets are $17 or $10 for ages 21 and under.

The Mahaiwe will screen The Motive and the Cue on Friday, April 26 at 6:30 p.m. Sam Mendes directs Johnny Flynn as Richard Burton, Mark Gatiss as John Gielgud and Tuppence Middleton as Elizabeth Taylor in this fierce and funny new play by Jack Thorne, offering a glimpse into the politics of a rehearsal room and the relationship between art and celebrity. Tickets are $17 or $10 for ages 21 and under.

The Mahaiwe will screen The Shawshank Redemption on Saturday, April 6 at 7 p.m. in recognition of the film’s 30th anniversary. This classic prison drama follows convict Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) through his claims of innocence and sentence at Shawshank State Prison. Andy befriends fellow prisoner Ellis “Red” Redding (Morgan Freeman), as the two navigate life in lock-up. Directed by Frank Darabont based on a novella by Stephen King. Rated R. Tickets are $8. Sponsored by BUCHWALD.

To celebrate Star Wars fandom’s “May the Fourth be with you” catchphrase pun, the theater will screen Star Wars: Return of the Jedi on Saturday, May 4 at 7 p.m. When the Empire prepares to crush the Rebellion with a more powerful Death Star, the Rebel fleet counters with a massive attack on the space station. In a final climactic duel, Luke Skywalker confronts Darth Vader. Rated PG. Tickets are $8 or $5 for ages 12 and under. Sponsored by BUCHWALD.

These programs join National Theatre titles Romeo & Juliet (February 10) and Vanya (February 24); the film When Harry Met Sally (February 14); Warren Miller’s All Time ski movie (February 17); and the Met Opera’s La Forza Del Destino (March 9), Roméo et Juliette (March 24), La Rondine (April 21) and Madama Butterfly (May 11) in the Mahaiwe’s upcoming screened offerings.
