Great Barrington, Mass.—The Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center has added two screenings from London’s National Theatre plus three holiday films to its year-round schedule: The Playboy of the Western World on October 2, Les Liaisons Dangereuses on November 6, The Wizard of Oz (1939) on November 28, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure (2017) on December 12 (free), and It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) on December 18 (free).
London’s National Theatre in HD
The Mahaiwe will screen The Playboy of the Western World from London’s National Theatre in HD on Friday, October 2 at 7 p.m. Caitríona McLaughlin (Artistic Director of the Abbey Theatre, Dublin) directs Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton), Éanna Hardwicke (The Sixth Commandment) and Siobhán McSweeney (Derry Girls) in John Millington Synge’s riveting story of youth and self-discovery. Pegeen Flaherty’s life is turned upside down when, on a normal day, a young man walks into her pub claiming that he’s killed his father. Instead of being shunned, the killer Christy Mahon becomes a local hero. The welcome murderer wins hearts and races as he beds himself into village life. That is until a second man unexpectedly arrives on the scene.
The Mahaiwe will screen Les Liaisons Dangereuses from London’s National Theatre in HD on Friday, November 6 at 7 p.m. Lesley Manville (Oedipus, Phantom Thread) and Aidan Turner (Rivals) lead the company in a striking new staging of Christopher Hampton’s (The Father) celebrated adaptation of Choderlos de Laclos’ classic novel – a thrilling game of love, lies and social warfare, directed by Marianne Elliott (Angels in America). Among the glittering salons of the super-rich, patriarchy equals power, reputation is everything – and for women, one misstep can mean ruin. Marquise de Merteuil, master in the art of survival, wields her influence with intelligence and control. Alongside the magnetic Vicomte de Valmont, they turn seduction into strategy and weaponize desire. But when their alliance collapses into rivalry, the battle between them threatens to destroy everyone in their path.
Tickets to National Theatre broadcasts are $17 or $10 for ages 21 and under.
Holiday films
The Mahaiwe will present The Wizard of Oz (1939) on Saturday, November 28 at 4 p.m. Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion return to the big screen for the Mahaiwe’s annual Thanksgiving weekend tradition. Judy Garland stars in this timeless musical by Victor Fleming. Tickets are $8 or $5 for ages 12 and under.
The Mahaiwe will screen the animated short Olaf’s Frozen Adventure (2017) on loop for free at the Indigo Room on Saturday, December 12, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., in conjunction with Great Barrington’s Holiday Shop, Sip & Stroll. Familiar favorites from Frozen embark on a new mission to spread cheer in this lighthearted holiday adventure. No reservations required.
The Mahaiwe will screen It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) on Friday, December 18 at 7 p.m. It’s a Wonderful Life tells this story of Geroge Bailey (James Stewart), a lost soul struggling around Christmastime. Directed by Frank Capra, the film takes a heartwarming turn when George is shown his impact on the community. The Mahaiwe screens this holiday classic every December for free. About the Indigo Room
The Indigo Room is a flexible performance venue in the former Great Barrington firehouse building at 20 Castle Street, next door to the historic Mahaiwe theater. Audience capacity ranges between 75 and 150 based on the floor plan for a given performance.
