FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Great Barrington, Mass.—The Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center announces the addition of two screened programs this winter: The Crucible from London’s National Theatre in HD, March 11 at 7 p.m., and The Birdcage from 1996, March 25 at 7 p.m.
The Mahaiwe will screen The Crucible from London’s National Theatre in HD on Saturday, March 11 at 7 p.m. Arthur Miller’s gripping parable of power and its abuse returns in an urgent new staging by director Lyndsey Turner (Under Milk Wood, Top Girls). A witch hunt is beginning in Salem. Raised to be seen and not heard, a group of young women suddenly find their words have a terrible power. As a climate of fear spreads through the community, private vendettas fuel public accusations and soon the truth itself is on trial. Tickets are $17 and $10 for everyone ages 21 and under.
The theater will present the 1996 comedy movie The Birdcage (rated R) on Saturday, March 25 at 7 p.m. Robin Williams and Nathan Lane are Armand and Albert, life partners and the owner and a performer respectively at The Birdcage, a drag club in Miami Beach. Armand’s son Val (Dan Futterman) is engaged to marry, and a plot is devised to deceive his fiancée’s socially conservative parents. Tickets are $8. Mahaiwe movies are sponsored by BUCHWALD.
The Crucible joins an encore of Straight Line Crazy, February 11, in the Mahaiwe’s National Theatre in HD lineup, and The Birdcage rounds out a winter movie series that includes Breaking Away (1979) on January 21, Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) on February 4, Shakespeare in Love (1998) on February 14, and My Neighbor Totoro (1988) on February 25. The Mahaiwe will resume its annual tradition of screening the latest Warren Miller ski movie over President’s Day weekend with Daymaker on February 18.
